I really can’t believe what I’m reading here. KMB intends spending $200m on retrofitting 1,000 dd buses with seatbelts whilst at the same time requesting an 8.5% increase in fares. This is a massive overreaction.
First of all, these will be the first normal, city type operation buses in the world to be so fitted. Why is HK so unique ? Next, how will the wearing of seat belts be enforced on a 90 seat dd bus ? Then, what about standees on buses ?: will such passengers be chained to handpoles which, by the way, I notice are largely eliminated from KMB’s newest buses ? What about passengers leaving their seats to alight whilst the bus is in motion ?
Bus operation is a high risk industry and accidents are inevitable for a multitude of unanticipated reasons. To suggest that ‘ We will not let similar accidents happen again’ is utterly naive. Whilst all responsible bus managers do all they can to prevent accidents, the unimaginable sometimes happens. I speak from experience having gone through it.
Regrettably, this is an unnecessary expense which other bus companies will be reluctantly forced to follow.
