If anything, I see hybrid-powered buses to be the more likely candidate to appear in HK in
short term, esp. London is looking to evaluate a few hybrid double deckers like the Wright
HEV and Volvo's hybrid "B9TL"s this year. If the trial proves successful, I think we stand a
good chance to se the first hybrid double decker in HK in the next 2/3 years.
Personally, I agree with this point of view.
As hybrid buses can reduce the consumption of fuel
and emission of wastes(CO2, Particulates, NOx)
What it have to do before introduced to Hong Kong
is just make some adjustments to suit the unique situation in Hong Kong
I am looking forward to see the first hybrid double decker introduces in next few years
(As bus companies and the Government need time to evaluate it)

...which will be the biggest challenge of the lot.
The problem of hybrid buses is they require very good cooling system for the powerplant,
but in HK, the hot weather is not going to help at all. When London introduced 6 Wright
Electrocities, which is just a Dart-size vehicle, in 2005, they suffered a lot of overheating
problems, esp over the summer.
Another thing that is not helping is the HK-spec double decker will require more power
to power the air-cond, which eats up a lot of power, and the bus itself, which will be a
lot heavier as a result. To do that, manufacturers will have to rely on better battery/
hybrid technology, as they always are, in the future, and try to find space to squeeze as
many battery units as they can. Of course, they can also go for a bigger dieseal engine
as a backup, but in doing so, the whole point of hybrid power is going to be diminished
badly.
Having said that, I still see a hybrid double decker to come to HK in around 5 years time.
