Actually riding on London Underground is fun due to different combinations of route to get to final destination. If you have time, make a few change in different stations and you can see all sort of funny things (Busking, drunk people, fun Drivers' public address on train to name a few). But if you are in hurry, as a general thumb of rule is making as little change as possible.
I heard of one occasion that District line train are "traffic jammed" between Acton Town and Earl's Court with eight trains stopped in between.
But for a Zone1+2 3Days Travel Card cost you 16.4 already... But if you do pay as you go, Capping rate is 4.6 for Zone1+2 per day (which make up to 13.8 for 3Days...)...

Yes, you have to make sure when travelling on tube and DLR, touch-in and touch-out to avoid the maximum cash fare. This will deduct dis-regard you have reach the cap or not. You could try to call Oyster helpline to see if you can get the charge back. Remembr to use some good excuse...
There is quite a lot of people using 'pay as you go' do not know they need to touch out to get the best fare and have their fare cap, especially for those had their travelcard elapsed. Travelcard users still need to touch in and touch out, but they do not get charge extra if they travel within the zones. Once they get used to this habit, when their travelcard go off. They will get the maximum fare if they careless.
